CANBERRA, Australia, 3 September 2020 – Lockheed Martin Australia (LMA) Chief Executive, Joe North, has congratulated the inaugural Gallipoli Scholarship Fund (GSF) LMA Bursary recipient, Clancy Gundrum.

Mr Gundrum was confirmed as the 2020 LMA Bursary recipient in April and is nearing the completion of his first year of study towards a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) and a Bachelor of Genetics at the Australian National University, Canberra.

Lockheed Martin Australia Chief Executive, Joe North, said that Mr Gundrum stood out for his academic achievements and genuine desire to make a difference.

“We are proud to partner with the Gallipoli Scholarship Fund and support Australia’s best and brightest to pursue their goals in STEM-based careers,” he said. “Lockheed Martin Australia congratulates Clancy on his selection; he was an outstanding candidate and we look forward to seeing his education and career develop as he pursues his dreams.”

On a visit to Lockheed Martin Australia House in Canberra, Mr Gundrum said he was delighted to have been selected for the 2020 LMA Bursary and aspired to pursue a STEM-based career in a field that enabled him to contribute towards a positive future for society.

“I was really surprised and excited to be the first-time recipient of this generous bursary. I hope that this inaugural award can become a longstanding opportunity for future Gallipoli scholars, offering them the same connections that I have now been afforded,” he said. “In the end, the most important thing to me is that I am engaged with what I do and that I feel I am making a significant change in the world, so I am

extremely grateful to be recognised by a company that operates so widely within the international STEM community.”

Commenting on his selection, the Chairman of the Gallipoli Scholarship Fund, Major General (Ret’d) Michael G Smith AO, said Mr Gundrum was a deserving recipient of the inaugural LMA Bursary.

“The Gallipoli Scholarship Fund is delighted that Clancy has been selected as the inaugural LMA Bursary winner, and that his studies are progressing well despite the challenges of COVID-19. Clancy's ANU courses in engineering and genetics fit well with Lockheed Martin Australia’s strategic interests and paves the way for future candidates,” he said.

About the Gallipoli Scholarship Fund LMA Bursary

The Gallipoli Scholarship Fund (GSF) is an Australian not-for-profit established in 1996 to provide scholarships for eligible descendants of Australian veterans to undertake tertiary study. The purpose of the GSF is to honour the memory and legacy of Australian veterans.

Lockheed Martin Australia announced the establishment of the LMA Bursary in February 2020 with an investment in excess of $120,000 to provide 12 bursaries in total — one in 2020 and a further 11 awarded up until the end of 2023.

To be eligible for an LMA Bursary, applicants must satisfy the same core criteria common to all Gallipoli scholarships as a direct descendant of an Australian veteran and additionally be enrolled in a tertiary course of study in a STEM field or related discipline.
